Two types of plastic are minimally used in the thermos:
The black plastic is polypropylene which has a melting point of 320 °F (160 °C). Polypropylene will not melt in the dishwasher, and is what most Rubbermaid food containers are made from.
The white part of the lid is made from ABS or Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, a light, rigid plastic used to make, among other things, children's musical instruments, protective head gear, and LEGOs. ABS ground down very small is a colorant in tattoo inks.
Green Home does not recommend storing food or drinks in plastic of any kind, especially if the plastic is heated. Heat is what causes plastic to become less stable and plastic molecules to come apart. Green Home does support limited uses of some plastics where their unique properties allow some greater green benefit, and where food or drink comes in only limited contact (as a lid or hinge, as is the case with this Thermos). The plastic in your life should be designed for long-time use. In the case of polypropylene, it is relatively stable, requires no plasticizers for flexibility, and given its incredible resiliance, is OK to use as a lid or hinge. Likewise, ABS is strong and shock-absorbing, and is also OK to use as a lid or hinge.
